Founded in 1909, the NAACP celebrates its 100th year anniversary in 2009. The Henrico NAACP plans to celebrate the occasion all of 2009 with a series of forums, guest speakers and a host of community activities.

Henrico County NAACP Celebrates a Successful
2008 Freedom Fund and Educational Awards Banquet

On Saturday, October 4, 2008, the Henrico County NAACP held its annual Freedom Fund and Educational Awards Banquet at 6:00 PM at Quiocassin Baptist Church, Richmond, Virginia. Over 150 attendees celebrated under the theme of "Power, Justice, Freedom, VOTE!"
The Mistress of the ceremony was Ms. Anita Blanton a reporter/anchor formerly with ABC News Channel 8. This was Ms. Blanton's last public appearance in the Richmond area before relocating to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. The branch felt it a privilege that she chose to serve the group as Mistress of Ceremony before her departure.
The keynote speaker was Rev. Michael Jones, Pastor of Village of Faith Ministries, Richmond, Virginia. His message, entitled "Empowering a Generation" highlighted the importance of activism, community involvement and personal responsibility in the current political and socio-economic environment. The branch applauds his service and commitment to addressing these issues especially during this election year.
Educational awards were presented to three outstanding Henrico County Public School 2008 graduates. Those recipients are Mr. Robert Earl Gibson, Jr. a 2008 Hermitage High School graduate who is now attending Virginia Commonwealth University majoring in Pre-Medical Illustration, Mr. Christopher J. Wade a 2008 Hermitage High School Graduate who is now attending North Carolina A&T University in Greensboro, North Carolina majoring in Mass Media Arts and Miss Monica McLemore a 2008 Henrico High School graduate who is now attending Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia majoring in Pre-Pharmacy.
In the annual Church King/Queen Contest, The Henrico County NAACP crowned Mr. Herbert Crushon of Quiocassin Baptist Church as its King. He will go on to represent the Henrico NAACP at the Annual State Convention being held October 31st- November 2nd in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Music during the program was rendered by Mr. Eric Stanley a Violinist who is a senior at Hermitage High School.
Branch service awards were presented to members of the branch that demonstrated outstanding performance during the 2007-2008 year. Ms. Dorothy Tatem, Branch Treasurer, received the Annie B. Hewlett Award for Service, Reverend Ken Willis received the Donald A. Willis Award for Service and Mrs. Helen Clayton Brown, Freedom Fund Banquet Chair, received the Presidents Award.
Lastly, the Henrico County NAACP would like to thank the following officials for their attendance and continuing support of the branch: Representatives from the office of Congressman Bobby Scott; Senator Donald McEachin of the Virginia Senate; Delegate Joe Morrisey, Delegate Stephen Shannon and Delegate John O'Bannon of the Virginia House of Delegates; The Honorable Frank Thornton, The Honorable James B. Donati, Jr. and The Honorable Patricia S. O'Bannon of the Henrico County Board of Supervisors; The Honorable Lamont Bagby of the Henrico County School Board; and Representatives of the Henrico Police and Fire Departments.
We extend our sincere thanks to Reverend Andrew M. Mosley, Jr. and the Hospitality Committee at Quiocassin Baptist Church for serving our banquet again this year.
